Pittsburgh Steelers
“The Steelers started this week with seven picks in the 2010 NFL Draft, and after the league was finished awarding 32 compensatory selections on Monday, they had 10. Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. And so, as a result of losing QB Byron Leftwich, WR Nate Washington and CB Bryant McFadden as unrestricted free agents – and signing none – the Steelers ended up with two extra picks in the fifth round and one extra in the seventh round. The Steelers’ two picks in the fifth will be the 33rd and 35th in the round, which correspond to the 164th and 166th overall selections. Their extra pick in the seventh is the 35th of the round, the 242nd of the draft. A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2010 NFL Draft were awarded to 19 teams.
The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 223 choices in the seven rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft (April 22-24). This year, the compensatory picks will fall between the end of the third round through the end of the seventh. Cincinnati, Tennessee and Atlanta were the only teams to get picks in the third round, and the Bengals were the lone team to receive a pick in the fourth round. The Steelers (with two), Falcons, Vikings, Chargers and Packers got picks in the fifth round.”

Goodell to meet Big Ben
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says he plans to meet with Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger about all of his recent off the field problems. Goodell already has spoken with team owners about Roethlisberger. Goodell says the league ‘takes this issue very seriously,’ and that he is ‘concerned that Ben continues to put himself in this position.’
All Steeler fans are concerned that he continues to make bad choices in his personal life. Sorry Ben, but you are a role model and need to act like it. Let’s start by keeping your sordid life off TMZ. You’re a laughing stock. You’ve managed to take what should be a proud period in Steelers history and make it an embarrassment. I, for one, have pulled my Randel El jersey out of storage and tossed the number 7 on the floor of my closet.

Luxury of Time
Steelers’ Pres Art Rooney finally broke his public silence regarding the latest Ben Roethlisberger embarrassment. Of course he didn’t comment on the case specifically, he did allude to the fact that the ’situation’ (and not the Jersey Shore Situation’) occurred at a good time. The team has the luxury of not having to make a quick move to replace Ben. It seems like this will partially play out before the season starts. And most attorneys say that if he were charged the trial would not likely start until the season is over.
Ed Bouchet quoted Rooney in the PG as follows:
“I mean, look that’s one of the things, we do have a little bit of luxury of time,” Rooney said this afternoon during an interview at Steelers offices, his first public comments since he issued a statement last week. “If we were at a different point in the year we may have to be thinking and doing something different. But at the moment, I think we’re in a situation we’re going to let this investigation play out and then go from there.”

Moron
Well, I’m back. I had some flooding in November and family matters since then but things are back on track. For me anyway. Ben Roethlisberger has managed to single handedly derail the storied Steelers franchise. This is of course an overstatement. The Steelers are much bigger than any one man. Or should I say man-child. This immature idiot needs full time protection, from himself. He seems intent on self destructive idiocy. I cannot begin to imagine why he puts himself in situations like this. Is it immaturity or stupidity? I guess it just does not matter. He has proven he cannot be trusted to make good decisions. If Dan and Art Rooney decide to salvage this guy they need to stipulate around the clock baby sitters.
All of this would assume he actually does not get criminally charged. All bets are off in that case. I am not alone in wondering if he actually did this. Many of us tried to give him the benefit of the doubt in the Reno incident. This case makes it much tougher. A 28 year old man-child travels a substantial distance to get to a club in a small college town? It just sounds like he was up to no good. I can only imagine what went on in the rumored ‘come to Jesus’ meeting between Ben and the Rooneys. Oh to be a fly on the wall.
On the bright side, the return of Randal El was a welcome surprise. I hated to see him leave and remember how classy he was on his way out. Very nice to see him return.

Steelers / Broncos
Okay, so it wasn’t really a clubbing. I just had to use that headline. The Steelers looked pretty good against a strong Denver Broncos’ team. My guess was 21 -13. So I wasn’t so far from the mark. This makes Sunday’s game against the Bengals huge. I get the sense that Cincy’s defeat of Pittsburgh boosted their confidence to create the season they’re having now. The Steelers now have a chance to deflate the Bengals and Ochocinco.
