Maz Coming Home

Mazaroski World Series winning home run in 1960

Maz Comes Home

I finally have a reason to write a favorable post about the Pirates! Unfortunately it’s about the 1960 Pirates. As you probably know, the family of Bing Crosby recently came across a kine scope recording of the 1960 World Series game. This is ‘The Game’. Yes game 7 which was won by the Maz home run. The Bingster was a partial owner of the Bucs and had someone record the game from a television broadcast. Of course the networks didn’t save any of this stuff so it is the only known recording of this event.

Bob Costas announced that he’ll be hosting the film for MLB films and that it will premier at a theater in Pittsburgh. This will mark the first time the game has been viewed in public in slightly more that fifty years.

This will be one hot ticket and will finally give Pittsburghers a reason to celebrate the Buccos in November. Imagine attending this screening with Maz and every other Pittsburgh hero in the house.

Bring Back Stan and Guy!

As a transplanted Pittsburgher I’m probably not alone in my disappointment in ESPN’s demise in Pittsburgh radio. I relied on Stan and Guy online to get my fix of Pittsburgh sports news. I had just purchased the ESPN Android app so I could listen on my phone. Thanks a lot ABC for failing to make sports talk work in the single most sports driven town in America. Keep my $2.99 for the app. Just be aware that my only reason for buying it was local Pittsburgh programming.

I’ve decided to start a Facebook group to encourage The Fan or Fox Sports radio to get the guys back on the air. Their friendship came through in their broadcasts. Please join the Facebook Group to show support for bringing these guys back to Pittsburgh sports radio!

I Want My Stan & Guy!

Stan & Guy Off ESPN

So the Steelers look unstoppable. The defense looks as good as any I’ve ever seen. The offense, led by the fourth string quarterback, racked up 38 points. It almost seems too good to be true. When Ben’s suspension was announced who would have guessed the team would get off to a 3 and 0 start? I actually heard someone on WDVE’s post game suggest a 16 – 0 season. It’s easy to get over confident about a start like this.

I heard an interesting stat on 97.3 ‘The Fan’ today. For those claiming the Steelers have had a cake walk the three teams the Steelers have beaten, TN TB & ATL are undefeated other than their losses to Pittsburgh.

On the down side, I just found out that ESPN Pittsburgh has moved to all network programming until the end of the year. They then become Disney Radio. Thanks ABC. Exactly how do you fail at making a sports station work in what is arguably one of the most rabid sports towns in America. I’m sad to see Stan & Guy leave the air. I for one hope ‘The Fan‘ picks them up. Those guys are great.

Leftwich Released

The Steelers today released Byron Leftwich. No, it isn’t that they have that much confidence in Dixon. They need room on the roster to bolster the defensive line. They signed McLendon from the practice squad to add depth. They’re expecting to bring Leftwich back next week.

It’s Dixon in Nashville

Dennis Dixon will start for Steelers against Titans

Dennis Dixon to STart in TN

Coach Tomlin says Dennis Dixon will start again against the Titans. “It starts that we won, and I thought that he got better as the game went on, there were some third down situations early in the game where he was delivering the ball to the appropriate target, but it was falling short. As the game went on I thought that he was not only making the routine plays but creating a little bit. Stepping up in the pocket and hitting Hines down the middle of the field on a third-and-8 was a signature play in terms on how he evolved over the course of the game. We are going with him because we assume he is going to continue to evolve not only in this week’s preparation but when he steps into that stadium as well.”

In other news, while Max Stark’s ankle injury was reported to not be as bad as we first thought, the Steelers announced that he’ll sit out Sunday’s game. Starks suffered the ankle injury during their opening game against the Atlanta Falcons, in which the Steelers chalked up a big win. The 28-year-old offensive tackle suffered a sprained ankle when a player fell on his right leg. Some sources reported that he could miss as many as four weeks; however, it was confirmed that Starks has a normal ankle sprain, which should take less time for recovery.
Since the starting offensive tackle isn’t available for Sunday’s match up, Jonathan Scott will make his first start for the Pittsburgh Steelers on the left side. “Jonathan has been a big addition to our outfit, and we expect him to play great ball if Max is unavailable,” said Tomlin

The Steeler defense should keep them in this one. However, football betting fans should consider themselves warned that the Titans are the favorites to win Sunday’s game.
