Santonio Gone?

[Both rumors reported below have been substantiated. Santonio is gone and also will be suspended.]
There are currently two rumors out there about troubled Steeler Santonio Holmes. The first, as reported by KDKA says he will face a four week suspension due to his off the field ‘issues’.

The second, a Twitter rumor, says he’s been traded to the Jets. Not so far fetched. I could easily see the Rooneys dumping him and his off field antics.

The bottom line is that the team will probably need to rely much more on Mike Wallace. Is he up yo it?

Ben Will Not Face Charges

ESPN has reported that a source tells them that no charges will be filed in the Georgia a sex assault case against Ben Roethlisberger. This is strictly an unofficial rumor. The DA has announced a press conference Monday at which he will make an announcement.

Experts told KDKA in Pittsburgh that 3 things could happen Monday. The DA could say there will be charges, there will not be charges or that he is referring the case to a Grand Jury.

Ben’s attorney says they have presented a case to the DA which proves that Ben should not be charged.

Of course, the complainant can still file a civil suit like the one Ben is facing in Reno.

That being said, what should the Steelers do here? How can they impress the importance of making better decisions upon the 28 year old quarterback?

The Pirates and Revenue Sharing

Pirates and the revenue sharing program

Pirates and the revenue sharing program

The Pirates opened the season with a big win over the Dodgers. That’s the good news. But a quick look at some cold hard facts makes it evident that this ownership group is just not committed to winning.

The Bucs open the season with Major League Baseball’s lowest roster salary. Yes, their paultry $35 million roster is again the lowest in the league. Considering the team received an estimated $35 million in league revenue sharing, there is around $100 mil not being pushed back into the club. Or at least into what is on the field. I understand there are other expenses related to running a baseball franchise. But let’s be serious, Arod and Jeter together make more than $35 million!

Let’s compare the behemoth Yankees. Of course the Bucs cannot pay salaries like that. But the Yanks revenue was estimated at $375 million with an estimated $236 million going to player costs. That amounts to around 63%. The Bucs are estimated to have revenues of about $137 million. That means the Pittsburgh Pirates are spending a miniscule 26% on player salaries!

Wonder why the Bucs cannot play 500 ball much less be a contender.

Stan and Guy

As a transplanted Pittsburgher I was happy to hear that ESPN radio 1250 is expanding the Stan and Guy to 4 hours! I depend on those guys to stay connected when I can’t be “home”.

The internet simulcast makes me feel at home. Thanks ESPN on behalf of Pittsburghers all around the world.

Steelers Get 3 Free Draft Picks

Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers

“The Steelers started this week with seven picks in the 2010 NFL Draft, and after the league was finished awarding 32 compensatory selections on Monday, they had 10. Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. And so, as a result of losing QB Byron Leftwich, WR Nate Washington and CB Bryant McFadden as unrestricted free agents – and signing none – the Steelers ended up with two extra picks in the fifth round and one extra in the seventh round. The Steelers’ two picks in the fifth will be the 33rd and 35th in the round, which correspond to the 164th and 166th overall selections. Their extra pick in the seventh is the 35th of the round, the 242nd of the draft. A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2010 NFL Draft were awarded to 19 teams.
The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 223 choices in the seven rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft (April 22-24). This year, the compensatory picks will fall between the end of the third round through the end of the seventh. Cincinnati, Tennessee and Atlanta were the only teams to get picks in the third round, and the Bengals were the lone team to receive a pick in the fourth round. The Steelers (with two), Falcons, Vikings, Chargers and Packers got picks in the fifth round.”
